Whitstable cadets at the RYA Volvo Youth Nationals

Easter week saw 3 of the Whitstable Cadet boats competing in the Volvo Youth Nationals in Weymouth.

The 3 boats competed in a competition that saw over 300 competitors.
The WYC teams were:
In the 420 fleet
Meia and Elin Harnett.
In the Spitfire fleet:
Hannah Fagg and Josh Clarke and
Alicia Clifford and Siobhan Lamb

The fleets had every condition to sail in during the week.
Day 1 saw them dealing with 26 knots of wind with gusts of 33 knots and a 2 meter swell which saw all the boats capsizing many times.
At one point one doctor was tending to Josh Clarke when he tried to break the dagger board with his ribs during a pitchpole and a second doctor was tending to Ellen Harnett after she fell against the mast during a capsize!
Day 2 and 3 saw force 3-5 with all fleets having fantastic racing out in the bay with smiles all round as they came in.
Day 4 saw the wind dropping just as the 3 boats got in to their stride and were all getting good results
Unfortunately Day 5 saw no wind so all racing was cancelled and so with only 9 races sailed in the 14 race series the three WYC boats never had a chance to recover from their DNFs on the first day but all had a fantastic time.
Final results were:
420: 40th
Meia and Elin Harnett (Which was a fantastic result because the have only just joined this fleet from Mirrors and their boat was brand new)
Spitfire:
8th Alicia Clifford and Siobhan Lamb
10th Hannah Fagg and Josh Clarke

A fourth Whitstable boat of Jack Kilburn was entered but he had to pull out because of a knee injury the at the last moment.
