Club Championships date change and sailing update

A message from the Rear Commodore Sailing:

Dear members,

I regret to say that our committee boat Slotty will be unavailable for the weekend May 24-26 when we had planned to hold the Club Championships and our stand in vessel has just developed a serious mechanical fault. Our plan is to move the Club Championships to the August bank holiday weekend (Aug 23-25) and the Town Regatta will be ran from the club line over the May Whitsun bank holiday (May 24-26). We apologise for having to change the dates for these events but wish to make sure that the Club Championships is an event worthy of its stature as the club’s premier regatta.

The Easter regatta saw some great racing with worthy winners in Robert Govier and David Figgis (All-in-Handicap) and Harry Newton (Lasers) who each won their fleets in both of the two races sailed. Last weekend saw us visited by a 20 strong Solo fleet with some intensive training in medium winds on Saturday with many finding the Whitstable waves and tide a little different to their inland lakes. Sadly, there was no racing on Sunday for the Spring Championships due to light winds, but they must have enjoyed Whitstable as we have already been asked whether we would host the event next year!

Next weekend sees the start of the Spring series with committee boat starts all three days and the first Transition to Racing event on Monday afternoon. We host the Toppers over the weekend May 10-11 with 32 boats booked for training on the Saturday and we expect similar numbers to race on the Sunday, so it’s another boat move for the first three Laser rows.

Many thanks to the volunteers who supported the Solo event and who have put their names down to help with the Toppers – and we do still need a safety boat crew on Monday May 5th should anyone like to help out – Contact me or Matt Young (email matt.young@wyc.org.uk).

See you on the water!
