New Committee Boat Mooring laid

We're pleased to announce that our new Committee Boat mooring was laid today, and we expect to have the WYC Committee Boat back on the mooring next week in time for up and coming events including the Merlin Open, Tasar Nationals, LaserFest and the Man of Kent.

The old anchor that had been causing issues was raised, and a new mooring made up of a pair of old railway wheels (weighing over 500kg each!) has been laid. The use of railway wheels as a mooring sinker, as recommended by the Whitstable Harbour Master and supplied by specialist mooring company EYE Marine, are great for moorings off Whitstable as they are flat, so won’t hook or damage the Committee Boat or mooring chain, and they suck into the sea bed and do not shift. They’re also a great way of recycling old railway wheels!

The mooring was lifted and laid by Whitstable Marine Services, a local independent company who specialises in moorings and marine work. Their shallow draft multicat ‘Liftmoor’ made short work of the mooring, laying with precision to GPS coordinates, and returning the old anchor to the West Quay.

Thanks to the team of volunteers at WYC who researched and coordinated the mooring, especially Peter King who was the driving force getting the mooring laid over the last few weeks.
