505 Open - Report and thanks!
Posted: Monday, 08 July, 2013
Whitstable Yacht Club hosted the 505 class for an Open event on 6th and 7th July, with the event run in glorious sunshine and brisk sea breezes on the Saturday and Sunday. Visiting sailors came from Belgium, Nottingham, Rock (Cornwall), Harwich, Herne Bay and Isle of Sheppey to join the four Whitstable boats. An event of this kind cannot be run without volunteers from the club, so thank you to those who gave up some of their weekend to help out. As usual they didn't disappoint, with the Laser Class providing the majority of the helping hands! A special note of thanks to Mike Fitzpatrick for organising the event. Results are available here, and click more for additional details on the class.
The 505 racing dinghies are a recent addition to Whitstable Yacht Club and the boats have attracted 9 or ten of our most keen and successful sailors from several other classes. The 505 is so called as it is 5.05 metres in length. They are large and rather heavy but often described as beautiful. They look very modern with their sweeping curves, yet they were designed in the mid 1950s by an Englishman to replace a dying French class and they have grown steadily all over the world since. The 505 is very fast but stable and rewarding when driven by two strong and experienced people, but no place for the faint hearted. We now have 3 modern 505s plus 1 elderly “Classic” model. The helms and crews are all former helms from other classes. If you want to try sailing a 505, please contact Mike Fitzpatrick who’ll be pleased to show you round a boat!
