Man of Kent - 21st September

This year's Man of Kent race will be held at Hampton Pier Yacht Club, just down the coast from WYC on 21st September. Back due to popular demand, Project F are confirmed to play Whitstable Yacht Club on Saturday 13th September as part of the Forts Race Weekend. This excellent band, who played a great closing set for Whitstable Week this year will be back at the club once more, in an event open to all club members and visiting sailors. Well done to Alastair Gould

Regular WYC sailor Alastair Gould took part in the Musto Skiff Nationals last weekend. His practice in all weathers at Whitstable obviously paid off as out of the 59 entries, he was one of the few competitors to complete all 10 races, in especially testing conditions. Alastair ended up in 45th place overall, a respectable position given the strong national and international competition! Congratulations Tom Pygall - Merlin Rocket National Champion

WYC member, Tom Pygall sailing with Olympic Silver medalist Stu Bithell, has won a very windy Merlin Rocket National championship at Looe. Day by day reports of the racing, together with some stunning videos can be seen on the Yachts and Yachting website. The videos are essential viewing for anyone interested in dinghy racing. This is the second time Tom had been champion, having won the title with Andy "Taxi" Davis at Hayling Island in 2011. Well sailed Tom, we are proud of you.

Harbour Day Thanks

Did you visit Whitstable Harbour Day on Saturday? Whitstable Yacht Club was well represented with a stand on the East Quay with an F18, Tasar, Topaz and Lasers on display, as well as a few of the White Horses Whitstable Floating Gallery Art Laser Sails. We had a good amount of interest, speaking with interested members of the public, including some potential new members, and had a great time representing WYC at this great Whitstable event. Thanks to all the volunteers from the club who helped with this event, including Stephen & Mei Baker
Francis Stileman, Dick Ledger, Abby & Chris Zambinski, Andy and Evo Jackson, Peter Johnson, Paul Kelly, John & Phillipa Bloyce, Robert Govier, Richard Earland, Theresa Page, Patty & Todd Baker, Harvey & Mary Williams, Tom Bruton Jnr and Jason Wild.

Whitstable Week 2014 - What a week!

WWeek Banner
What an amazing week! Over 60 boats took part in the week's racing, and all of the scheduled races were sailed, under a very wide range of wind and sea scapes. The week started with strong northerly winds and a lumpy sea. Tuesday saw a swing to the west and a drop to almost nothing, then Thursday gave us a light but gusty southerly, raising to a strong southerly on Friday. The changing conditions kept it close at the top of the fleets, with only a few points between boats. We also had a fantastic and very enthusiastic turnout on Wednesday for Families and Cadets day, with lots of fun on and off the water.
The club was kept busy into the evenings with a great selection of social events, with a stand out performance by Project F on the decking on Friday (don't forget to like their Facebook page!).

The week couldn't have happened without the hard work of many people in the club. Special thanks to John Boorman (Principle Race Officer), Ian Wild (Assistant Race Officer and Committee Boat Driver), Ian Embry and his team of Safety Boat Drivers and Crew, Jill Fagg and Katie Burgess (Race Recorders), Sally Gostelow (Race Results and prizes), Margaret Winn (Beach Radio Liason), Tom Bruton Jnr and the Cadet Committee (organising Family and Cadet day), the Kitchen, Tea Bar and Bar staff, Club Manager Jeff Emerson, and finally Robert Govier and the Sailing Committee for organising the week. Half way through Whitstable Week!

WWeek Banner
We've now crossed the half way point of a classic Whitstable Week, with over 60 boats taking part. Monday saw strong winds and a choppy sea, Tuesday saw a very light and shifty breeze, and Wednesday saw the sea full of 'pirates' for Families and Cadets day. For the results so far, see wyc.org.uk/on-the-water/results. The action hasn't just been restricted to the water, with great bands playing at the club on Monday and Tuesday night, and a very competitive quiz night on Wednesday evening with over £100 raised for the RNLI!

The weather forecast is looking favourable for a fine last two days of the week, with sun and a Southerly force 3-4. This afternoon we have 2 races starting at 2pm followed by an opportunity to talk about the club direction with the Commodore and members of the General Committee at 6pm. Tomorrow (Friday) we have a packed schedule. There's another opportunity to talk to the Commodore and GC at 11am, then the final 2 races of Whitstable Week starting at 2pm. On shore we have a BBQ starting at around 5pm, Whitstable Week Prize Giving at 7pm, then band Project F to bring the week to a close from 8pm.

Exciting start to Whitstable Week

WWeek Banner
Whitstable Week 2014 kicked off yesterday with a challenging day of racing on choppy seas. Although the promised rain held off, the wind maintained a good Northerly force 3-5, with plenty of chop, creating some exciting conditions. Over 35 boats have entered so far, with visiting boats from Broadstairs SC, Wilsonians SC, Worthing SC, Hayling Island SC, Hampton Pier YC and Tankerton Bay SC, and the day saw close racing across the fleets. With lighter winds and a sunny blue sky forecast for today, the positions throughout the fleets are likely to change, making for some interesting changes in positions! Full results can be found at wyc.org.uk/on-the-water/results

Today (Tuesday) we two races, with the first start at 2pm, then this evening 'General Recall', the WYC house band will be playing. Wednesday is Cadet and Family day, with fun on and off the water for all ages, then quiz night in the evening.

NSSA National Youth Regatta

The National Schools Sailing Association National Youth Regatta was held at Downs Sailing Club in Deal last week, which saw several hundred children on the water competing at a national level at this 5 day event. Congratulations to Whitstable cadets Conor Lamb and Issie Bruton who represented Kent in the Topper class, and came in 7th and 26th respectively in the 70 strong Topper fleet.
Whitstable Yacht Club was also represented on the water in the Safety Boat fleet, with one of the Whitstable Safety Boats on the water, manned by volunteers from WYC. Thanks to Ian Embry and John Cooper for spending the week on the water, laying courses and keeping the fleet safe.
On shore, the White Horses Whitstable Floating Gallery Art Laser Sails were prominently displayed in the main pavilion, and WYC Commodore Richard Earland gave a talk on the subject as part of the week.
