Art On Sea poster
Going up at railway stations around Kent, this is the poster advertising the launch of the White Horses Whitstable floating exhibition, which will set sail from the yacht club on the 11th and 17th August.

Part art show, part boat race, these events will offer a unique and inspiring experience for spectators on the beach, and these posters will ensure that the events bring Whitstable Yacht Club and the sport of Sailing to a new audience.

White Horses Whitstable is a collaboration between Whitstable’s sailing community and Kent Artists. The project, developed by local artists Tracey Falcon and Andy Evans, and yacht club members Richard Earland and Andy Jackson, involves original artwork designed by local artists being printed onto Laser sails.

Feel free to ask Richard or Andy questions about White Horses Whitstable, visit the website: whitehorseswhitstable.co.uk, post on our Facebook page: facebook.com/whitehorseswhitstable, or tweet about the project here: @whitehorseswhit.
Here are some answers to the most frequently asked questions about the project:

How did the project start? The project was initiated by the organisers of the Canterbury Festival, and developed by an arts group called Prosper. White Horses Whitstable is one of five initiatives selected by Prosper that will be seen around East Kent this summer. Find out more here: www.prospertogether.co.uk.

How is the project funded? The project is funded by an Arts Council England grant secured by the Canterbury Festival in order to develop new models of sustainable creative practice across East Kent. White Horses Whitstable is also supported by Canterbury Christ Church University, who are a major sponsor, and the project benefits from the generosity of a number of private sponsors. There has been no financial cost to the yacht club.

Who will be sailing the boats? The art will be printed onto a fleet of Laser sails for the floating exhibition, and we have been fortunate to have the enthusiastic support of the club’s Laser fleet. The Laser helms will be sailing a series of exhibition races, with the art sails on their boats. The sails will belong to White Horses Whitstable, but we expect some sailors will also use the art sails in occasional club races.

Who benefits from this? This is a valuable profile raising event for the club, and we expect to get good local and even national media coverage. Many visitors and residents of Whitstable will become more aware of our activity on the water, and we may even get some new members. It is also an opportunity for both artists and sailors to become more aware of each other’s worlds, and it will enrich our experience of sailing, and of using the club.
