Elma Smedley

We are very saddened to hear of the passing of Elma Smedley (Wilby) after a short illness. She will be greatly missed by husband Paul and her children Geoff, Lizzie and Sarah.
Elma was a longstanding member of WYC and one of those ‘stand out’ great characters, never to be forgotten. She and Gaye Woolven were a riotous partnership in their Dart 15 ‘Tiddly Too’. She was always at the centre of the social scene ashore, while at the same time a kind and caring person who will be well remembered and loved by the many people whom she treated at the Harbour Medical Centre.
Paul and Elma loved their sailing and were regulars acting as committee vessel for the Swale Regatta each year, they were also great classic car buffs travelling many miles in Paul’s Morgan three wheeler and Austin 7.
Please pass on your messages of condolence onto Sally at the club and we will be sure to pass these on to Paul.

Great Roast!

If you weren't there on Sunday, you missed a great meal! Here's a review from one of the diners:
"We had a fabulous meal - beautifully cooked and plenty of it. The pud was divine - orange chocolate bread and butter pudding with custard - to die for! Big thanks from all six of us to ‘Keith’s Crew’ they did him proud and we are all looking forward to the next one. A wonderful Sunday - great food, great company and a glass or two of wine - perfect."
Keep an eye out for the next one!

Dart 18 Open at WYC - Report

Whitstable Yacht Club welcomed the Dart 18 fleet for GP7, which was the last TT event of the Dart 18 season, and the last Open event hosted by WYC in 2018! 28 boats entered, including travellers from as far afield as Yorkshire, with the Dart 18 showing its diversity and ability to attract sailors from across age ranges, and including all male, all female, mixed crews and single-handers. Despite only two races, Whitstable Yacht Club demonstrated once again it's ability to run a quality event, and be a popular destination for sailors and their families! Overall results from the two races saw Rob and Fi from Worthing Sailing Club take the undisputed first place overall, with Dan and Alyesha from Isle of Sheppey Sailing Club in a well deserved second. David and Chris from Portsmouth SC consistently stayed at the top of the fleet, with their 5th and 3rd place putting them in third overall. Top Whitstable Yacht Club boat was Abby and David , and the first single hander was Tony, also from WYC! Full results can be seen at wyc.org.uk/on-the-water/results.
Thanks to all of the volunteers and staff from Whitstable Yacht Club for working hard to put on the event, and thanks to the travelling Dart 18 fleet for coming to the club and being such a friendly bunch!
Full report available on Yachts and Yachting, and photos from the event can be viewed at https://www.flickr.com/photos/134975423@N08/sets/72157702626354914.

Forts Race Report

The 23rd Forts Race Weekend, sponsored by Marlow Ropes and supported by Whitstable Marine and Integral Asset Management, was held on 8th and 9th September at Whitstable Yacht Club. The weekend delivered fantastic sailing conditions for the high-performance catamarans that gathered to take part in the event, and made for great racing on the waters off Whitstable.
See Yachts&Yachting for the full race report, wyc.org.uk/on-the-water/results for results, and the event's Facebook page for photos at facebook.com/FortsRace.

Laser Sailing - The Movie

The Laser class has had a great few years, growing in size, producing some excellent club racing every week with the largest fleet at WYC, and creating a popular Laserfest event which has now expanded to three clubs (Broadstairs Sailing Club sees the finale this weekend, see www.laserfest18.com for more information). Laser sailor Paul Kelly has been documenting the sailing this year, with some help (and lots of footage) from the other Laser sailors, in a (almost) weekly 'vlog', which you'll need to sign up to the Facebook Whitstable Yacht Club Laser Class group to see. This week he's also put together a highlight video, which is a great showcase for Laser Sailing at Whitstable Yacht Club, and you can watch on YouTube at youtu.be/n67PksDv4bA.
If you want to know more, or try out Laser Sailing, contact 'Capt'n Mike', the Laser Class Captain (and interviewer/host for the Laser weekly vlogs!).
